3 arrested for printing counterfeit currency worth Rs.5.26 lakh
MEERUT, Oct. 16 -- Three men have been arrested for allegedly printing counterfeit currency worth Rs.5.26 lakh in Muzaffarnagar, police said on Thursday, claiming that the accused were inspired by the web series Farzi and learned to produce fake notes through YouTube.
Senior superintendent of police Suraj Rai said police received information about a counterfeit currency racket on Wednesday. Acting on the tip-off, a team conducted a raid near Wazid Hotel on the Meerut-Karnal highway and detained three suspects.
The accused were identified as Shubham, a resident of Baghpat; Mahendra, a resident of Pauri Garhwal; and Tinu, a resident of Meerut. Police recovered counterfeit currency with a face value of Rs.4 lakh from them during a search.
According to the SSP, Shubham was the alleged mastermind of the racket. Based on information provided by him, police raided his flat in Delhi's Narela and recovered additional counterfeit notes worth Rs.1,26,500.
Police also seized a laptop, a colour printer, and bundles of cotton and butter paper allegedly used to print the fake currency. The total value of the fake notes recovered during the operation was Rs.5,26,500.
During interrogation, the accused allegedly told police they wanted to get rich quickly. Inspired by Farzi, a web series on Amazon Prime Video, they believed printing counterfeit currency could help them make money. They then learned the process through YouTube, procured the required equipment and materials, and began printing fake notes, police said.
Investigators suspect that the gang was attempting to circulate counterfeit currency in the market.
Police have registered a case against the three accused and sent them to jail. Further investigation is underway to establish the extent of the racket and identify others involved in producing and circulating the counterfeit notes....
