2nd-yr student dies by suicide at IIT Bombay
Mumbai, Sept. 19 -- A second-year undergraduate student of the Energy Science and Engineering department at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay allegedly died by suicide on Friday, prompting students to gather at the institute's main gate and demand answers from the administration.
In a statement issued on Friday evening, IIT Bombay said the student was found using a mobile phone during an examination and had uploaded the question paper on ChatGPT to seek answers. "No disciplinary action was initiated against the student," the institute said. According to IIT Bombay, the matter was discussed with the student by the instructor and the head of the department, who counselled him and assured him that it would not adversely affect his academic career. The student later returned to his hostel room, where he was found dead in the evening, the institute said.
"IIT Bombay is deeply saddened by the loss of a student...," the institute said in its statement.
It said the circumstances surrounding the death were being looked into by the authorities....
