Lucknow, July 31 -- Doctors at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) have successfully removed a giant ovarian tumour, almost the size of a nine-month pregnancy, from a 35-year-old unmarried woman while preserving her uterus and healthy ovary, ensuring that she can still become a mother in the future. The woman had been suffering from a swollen abdomen, a constant feeling of heaviness and increasing breathlessness for several months. As the tumour continued to grow, it became so large that it pressed against her urinary bladder and intestines, making it difficult for her to walk, breathe and carry out daily activities. Tests revealed that a massive tumour measuring 28.7 x 20.4 x 15.8 cm had developed in her left ovary. During the surgery, doctors drained 7.5 litres of fluid from the tumour before removing it. The operation became more challenging when surgeons found another cyst in the patient's right ovary. To decide the safest treatment, they immediately examined a sample of the tumour during surgery using a rapid laboratory test. The report confirmed that the tumour was non-cancerous (benign). With this confirmation, doctors were able to remove only the affected left ovary while preserving the uterus and the healthy right ovary. This means the woman still has the possibility of conceiving in the future. The surgery was carried out by a team led by Dr. Nidhi Singh, along with Dr. Anju Rani, Dr. Monika and Dr. Shikha. Pathologists Dr. Ritu Verma and Dr. Ram Nawal Rao provided critical support during the operation by quickly examining the tumour. Dr. Nidhi Singh said ovarian tumours often do not cause noticeable symptoms in the early stages and may continue growing silently. She advised women not to ignore persistent abdominal swelling, increasing stomach size, unexplained heaviness, difficulty in passing urine or stool, or breathlessness, as early diagnosis can prevent serious complications....
