GORAKHPUR, Aug. 31 -- : A dispute over an alleged Rs.400 debt linked to country-made liquor turned fatal in Gorakhpur, when a 27-year-old youth was allegedly beaten to death at a market in an area under the Gulriha police station. The deceased was identified as Mewalal Prajapati, a resident of Gonaha Tola Sendhwa under the Paniyara police station area of neighbouring Maharajganj district. Following a complaint lodged by Mewalal's wife, Raj Mati, police registered a case and arrested one of the accused. According to Raj Mati, Mewalal had gone to the market at around 5 pm on Saturday along with his son Ansh and son-in-law. There, he allegedly consumed country-made liquor sold by Ramkesh Nishad, a resident of Jungle Sakhni Tola Rohua. A dispute reportedly broke out between the two over an outstanding payment of Rs.400. The deceased's wife alleged that Ramkesh Nishad assaulted Mewalal in the presence of his son and son-in-law, leaving him critically injured. The family subsequently informed the police through Dial 112. A police team reached the spot and took Mewalal to a hospital for treatment, where doctors declared him dead, according to the complaint. Gulriha station house officer (SHO) J.P. Pal said the accused was in custody and that further legal action would be taken based on the post-mortem report.
