26 held for demanding money for 'Sugam Darshan' at KV temple
VARANASI, May 25 -- Police on Sunday arrested a total of 26 people for allegedly misbehaving with pilgrims and demanding money under the pretext of arranging "Sugam Darshan" (easy viewing) at the Baba Kashi Vishwanath Temple. Of these, 23 were operating near Gate No. 4 of Baba Kashi Vishwanath Dham and three from the Dashashwamedh area.
Dashashwamedh assistant commissioner of police (ACP) Atul Anjan Tripathi confirmed the arrests, stating that the police received information that certain individuals were arguing with devotees at Gate Number 4 of Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple after taking money from them to facilitate darshan.
When the police team reached the spot, the 23 suspects at the Dham were allegedly threatening to kill the devotees.
The ACP noted that despite police efforts to pacify them, they continued their inappropriate behaviour, becoming furious and more agitated with the devotees and the police force.
All 23 accused at the Dham were arrested under Section 170 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The preventive action was taken under Sections 170/126/135 BNSS, the ACP added.
The arrested accused from Gate No. 4 include Ranjit Pandey, 35, Kanhaiya Pandey, 34, Babu Pandey, 30, Pratap Kumar, 50, Sanjay Gupta, 48, Rishi Yadav, 47, and others.
Separately, three other accused-identified as Govind Sahni, 46, Praveen Mishra, 23, and Naval Srivastava, 23-were arrested from a street leading to the Varahi Devi Temple in the Dashashwamedh area for misbehaving with visitors and extorting money in the name of ensuring easy darshan of Baba Kashi Vishwanath....
