25-yr-old man kills neighbour in bid to steal cumin in Jaisalmer
Barmer/Jaisalmer, April 26 -- A 25-year-old man was arrested on Saturday for killing his 50-year-old neighbour in a botched attempt at a robbery in Rajasthan's Jaisalmer district, police said.
According to district superintendent of police Abhishek Shivhar, the incident occurred late on April 21 in Bire ki Dhani village when the victim, Hathu Devi, was alone at home. Her husband, Amararam was a cumin farmer, and around 30 sacks of cumin were stored in the house, worth Rs.5-6 lakh in total.
The SP added that the accused, Hem Singh, was involved in previous trade disputes with Amararam. He allegedly arrived at the house with a pistol to steal the cumin. However, after Hathu Devi purportedly heard movement outside the house and went close to a window to check, he shot her once in the head at point-blank range through the window, killing her instantly.
Police said Singh subsequently fled the spot with Amararam's tractor, which he abandoned around 8 kilometres from the house, and proceeded to try to erase the trail of footprints and tyre marks using sand.
Amaram found his wife's body when he returned home the next morning and subsequently approached the police, they added.
According to Shivhare, Singh returned to the scene of the crime and offered to assist with the probe.
Singh was detained, and subsequently confessed to the crime, he said.
Police said that Singh suffered from alcoholism and was in heavy debt due to the addiction, adding that they suspected these to serve as a motive.
A case was filed against Singh under relevant sections of the BNS and the Arms Act....
