PRAYAGRAJ, Aug. 15 -- A 25-year-old man allegedly died after being assaulted by his wife's relatives while returning with her after recording her statement at Kunda police station on Thursday evening, police said. He succumbed to his injuries at a hospital in Prayagraj early Friday. The deceased, identified as Shivnath Yadav alias Munnu, a resident of Mahmadpur Barai village under Kunda police station, had married 20-year-old Archana Yadav, also from the same village, around two months ago. The couple had been living together pursuant to an Allahabad high court order. According to police, Archana had eloped with Shivnath, prompting her uncle Virendra Kumar Yadav to lodge a case against Shivnath, Pankaj Yadav, Suman and two-three unidentified persons. As the couple was living together under the court's order, the investigating officer called them to Kunda police station on Thursday evening to record Archana's statement in connection with the case.Police said some of Archana's family members learnt about their visit to the police station. While the couple was returning later that evening, they were allegedly intercepted near Suanari in the Hathigwan police station area, where Shivnath was allegedly assaulted and seriously injured.Hathigwan police took him to the community health centre in Kunda, from where he was referred to Prayagraj for treatment. He died early Friday, police said.Hathigwan station house officer Satyendra Singh said a case was initially registered under relevant sections for assault on Archana's complaint against her uncle Satyendra Yadav, Virendra Yadav, Prem Yadav, a relative from Sahabpur in Kunda, and Raj Yadav of Tivaripur in Manikpur."The couple was returning after recording their statements at Kunda police station when Shivnath was attacked near Suanari. The body has been sent for postmortem," Singh said.Singh said the case would be converted into a murder case after the postmortem report and further action would be taken against those accused of the assault.
