Meerut, Aug. 2 -- A 20-year-old bicycle mechanic was allegedly stabbed to death in Uttar Pradesh's Shahjahanpur district on Friday night, in Kamalnainpur village under the Kant police station limits. Police have arrested the prime accused, identified as Sameer, and detained four other suspects, while a viral video purportedly showing the accused claiming sole responsibility for the killing has become a key focus of the investigation. The victim, Gautam Maurya, a resident of Kamalnainpur village, worked at a bicycle repair shop near Canal Kothi on Jalalabad Road. According to police and locals, Gautam was allegedly called by Sameer, who runs a salon in the area, on Friday night. At around 10 pm, four youths allegedly took him away from Dilawarpur crossing. Police said Gautam was attacked with a knife, sustaining multiple stab wounds to his head, neck and shoulder. During the altercation, another youth also suffered a head injury. After the attack, the accused allegedly abandoned the critically injured Gautam by the roadside and attempted to flee. The incident drew the attention of nearby villagers, who surrounded one of the accused, identified as Sameer, and assaulted him before handing him over to the police. Officers rushed Gautam to the community health centre, from where he was referred to the Government Medical College. However, he succumbed to his injuries while being shifted. Superintendent of Police Saurabh Dixit visited the Government Medical College after the incident to review the situation. He confirmed that Sameer had been arrested and four other individuals had been taken into custody for questioning. To ensure a swift investigation, police have constituted two special teams under the leadership of SP City Devendra Kumar. A one-minute and 44-second video of the arrested accused has surfaced on social media. In the clip, recorded after he was caught by local residents, Sameer is purportedly heard claiming that he carried out the murder alone. He further alleges that Gautam had behaved inappropriately with his sister and says that this prompted him to commit the crime. Following the killing, police deployed a heavy security presence in the locality where the accused resides to prevent any communal flare-up and maintain law and order.
