2 prime accused in Banbhulpura 2024 riots case surrender: cops
Haldwani, May 15 -- Two prime accused in the 2024 Banbhulpura riots case, Javed Siddiqui and Arshad Ayub, surrendered before a local court in Haldwani following directions of the Supreme Court. The local court subsequently remanded both accused to 14 days of judicial custody, officials said on Thursday.
According to officials, the Supreme Court on May 6 set aside an order of the Uttarakhand high court that had granted default bail to the two accused. The bench comprising justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta directed them to surrender before the trial court within two weeks, failing which strict action would be initiated. The order came after hearing a special leave petition filed by the Government of Uttarakhand challenging the bail granted by the high court.
Circle officer and investigating officer Amit Kumar Saini said that in compliance with the Supreme Court's directive, both accused, residents of Banbhulpura, surrendered before the court of the additional district judge I on Tuesday....
