LUCKNOW, Sept. 16 -- Two men were arrested for allegedly stealing jewellery and other valuables from passengers travelling on long-distance trains. Police recovered yellow-metal jewellery estimated to be worth Rs 25 lakh from their possession, the Government Railway Police (GRP) said on Tuesday. The accused, identified as Puneet Kumar Gangwar, 30, a resident of Puraina Jahanabad in Pilibhit, and his associate Akash Pal, 29, of Gomti Nagar, Lucknow, were arrested near the guard lobby towards the Jhansi end of Agra Cantt railway station, officials said. GRP officials said the arrests followed an investigation into two theft cases reported at Agra Cantt and Mathura Junction. The cases were registered under sections 305(c)/317(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at GRP Agra Cantt and 305(b)/317(2) at GRP Mathura Junction. GRP circle officer Rajesh Dixit said the accused allegedly targeted passengers travelling on long-distance trains. "The accused would allegedly wait for passengers to fall asleep at night and then steal their bags, purses and jewellery before getting down at a station," Dixit said. Dixit said Puneet had told investigators that he had qualified the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) in the past. "He has claimed that he qualified NEET, but the claim has not yet been verified," he said. Police said Puneet has been named in more than 27 criminal cases in different jurisdictions. Investigators are also checking the recovered jewellery against complaints registered in connection with the Agra Cantt and Mathura Junction thefts to establish the ownership of the valuables.
