2 die, 8 hurt as balcony of house in Mahona collapses
LUCKNOW, June 27 -- Two minor boys, both aged 12, died while eight others were injured after a balcony of a house collapsed during a Moharram procession in Mahona town under Itaunja police station limits late on Friday night. Five among them were critically injured and referred to the KGMU, said officials.
The deceased were identified as Armaan and Ali. The incident occurred in ward no 2, where residents had gathered to watch the Moharram procession and distribute 'sharbat'.
According to police, one Mushtaq was distributing 'sharbat' outside his house during the procession. Several members of his family and other locals, including children, were standing in the balcony to watch the procession when the structure suddenly collapsed, causing them to fall along with the debris. During the collapse, many people were already beneath the balcony.
Itaunja SHO Shobharan Singh said the balcony, located around six feet above the ground, was structurally weak and collapsed due to the excessive load of people standing on it. Police personnel and local residents immediately launched a rescue operation and shifted the injured to nearby hospitals.
Dr VK Sharma, chief medical superintendent of Ram Sagar Mishra Combined Hospital, said two minors were brought dead to the hospital.
He added that three others were undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Chief medical superintendent of KGMU Trauma Centre, Dr Prem Raj Singh, said a father, his three-year-old son and others were referred to the facility. The three-year-old child is in stable condition, while the father remains unconscious and is under close medical observation.
Police have sent the bodies for post-mortem examination and initiated an investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the balcony collapse....
