19-year-old AMU student found dead in hostel room
AGRA, Aug. 13 -- A 19-year-old undergraduate student was found dead in her hostel room at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) early Wednesday morning.
The second-year Bachelor of Arts student, who resided in Indira Gandhi Hall, was found hanging from the ceiling. University authorities reported that the proctorial team was alerted to the incident at approximately 1:00 am on Wednesday. The team arrived on the scene within 10 minutes and immediately notified the Civil Lines police. According to AMU proctor Prof Mohammad Naved Khan, the student's roommate was in a different room at the time of the incident, and no suicide note was recovered from the premises.
According to the authorities, the deceased girl had a heated conversation on Tuesday night on phone with her mother who later found no response from the daughter for an hour. After failing to receive a response for an hour, the mother contacted a friend residing in the same hostel. When the friend and other students arrived at the room, they found the door locked from the inside and forced it open.
While university authorities have not cited an exact cause, they noted that family discord may have been a factor.
Police at the Civil Lines station confirmed on Wednesday evening that the student's family had arrived in Aligarh. No formal complaint has been filed, and the body has been sent for a post-mortem....
