VARANASI, July 26 -- The Bhumi Poojan for the Rs.221-crore Dalmandi road widening project is likely to be held during the first week of Shravan, between July 30 and August 5, after authorities demolished 10 more buildings on Friday, bringing the total number of cleared structures to around 170 out of 187 identified for acquisition. Senior officials, including additional district magistrate (City) Rajesh Kumar, PWD executive engineer KK Singh, and officials of the Varanasi Development Authority (VDA) and Nagar Nigam, supervised the demolition amid heavy security. Three of the 10 buildings were previously declared illegal by the VDA. "Elaborate security arrangements were made during the demolition drive," said Dashashwamedh ACP Atul Anjan Tripathi. PWD executive engineer KK Singh said efforts are underway to clear the debris and complete the remaining work within the stipulated timeframe. A senior official said about 170 of the 187 structures falling within the project's alignment have been demolished after compensation was paid to the owners. The affected properties include six mosques. The project will widen the 650-metre Dalmandi road from its current width of about five metres to 17.4 metres at an estimated cost of Rs.221 crore....
