17 MBBS pupils fined, suspended for 3 months
Kanpur, Oct. 28 -- Seventeen MBBS students at Government Medical College in Orai, Jalaun, have been suspended for three months and fined Rs 25,000 each for ragging. The college described it as its biggest action so far against the practice.
The students will not be allowed to attend classes, stay in the hostel or perform clinical duties during the suspension, principal Dr Arvind Trivedi said.
The action follows the circulation of a video showing ragging of junior students from the 2025 batch. Initially, seven senior students were suspended for a week and fined Rs 1,000 each.
Following an outcry, the college management widened the scope of the inquiry, which found 10 more students guilty, taking the total to 17.
The principal had also issued instructions making it clear that asking juniors for their mobile phone numbers would be treated as a punishable offence.
Dr Trivedi said the college was following a zero-tolerance policy towards ragging. The latest disciplinary action was taken on the recommen- dation of the anti-ragging committee, he said, adding that no student found involved in ragging would be spared in the future....
