MEERUT, July 1 -- In a case of alleged hate crime, a 16-year-old boy allegedly strangled his 18-year-old sister to death at their home in Meerut on Tuesday, allegedly claiming that her relationship with a neighbour and refusal to return to her husband's home had brought "dishonour" to the family. The juvenile later surrendered at a nearby police outpost and confessed to the crime, police said.
The incident took place in Rasoolnagar village under the Lohiyanagar police station limits. According to police, the accused allegedly strangled his sister, Ilma, inside a room of their house around 4 p.m. About 30 minutes later, he walked nearly 500 metres to the Fatehullapur police outpost and informed officers he had murdered her.During preliminary questioning, the juvenile allegedly told police that Ilma had been living at her parental home for the past six months and had refused to return to her matrimonial home. He also alleged that she had developed a relationship with a neighbour, which had become a source of embarrassment for the family.
The accused further claimed that Ilma had allegedly eloped with the neighbour at around 6 a.m. on Sunday. He alleged that villagers mocked the family after the incident, damaging its standing in the community. According to his statement, Ilma returned home at around 9 am on Tuesday, after which he decided to kill her later that evening.

During the panchayat, it was decided that if the young man married her, the family would not pursue legal action. The man's family agreed to the proposal, following which the two were married through a nikah.
Police said Ilma returned to her parental home about six months ago. During this period, she allegedly became involved in a relationship with a neighbour. She allegedly left home with him on Sunday before returning on Tuesday morning.
Investigators said family members asked Ilma to return to her husband's home after she came back, but she allegedly refused, saying she would never return to her matrimonial home.
