155 Whispers of Light go on show
LUCKNOW, Aug. 19 -- A photography exhibition consisting of over 155 photographs clicked by as many as 80 students, faculty members, alumni and other photographers began at Arts College of Lucknow University on Tuesday.
The exhibition, 'Whispers of Light,' was organised by the College of Arts Photographic Society (CAPS). It will be formally inaugurated on Wednesday.
This year, CAPS has dedicated the exhibition to the memory of legendary Indian photographer Raghu Rai, recognising his contribution to photography and photojournalism, said curator and faculty member Atul Hundoo. "We also have two digitally-mastered prints of our mentor PC Little," said Hundoo.
Walking through the gallery on the first floor of the Arts College, one can find different moods, including contemporary, landscape, aviary, street, monochrome, commercial, festivities and aesthetic photography. An installation featuring photographs meant to be sold has also been set up. "The photographs on sale begin from Rs 20 and on day one we sold several photographs as visitors bought them for their artistic appeal and physical feel," said Hundoo.
Yashvi Sinha, a BVA fourth-year student pointing to one of her photographs, said that she was trying to capture a cockfight.
"CAPS provided us an opportunity to discover different aspects of photography. I learnt ways to present simple subjects artistically, like in the displayed photograph where cocks can be seen fighting while a crow watches from the other corner," said Sinha.
Another student, Mayank Rastogi, a second year MVA photography student said that he clicked a photograph depicting circles and forms. "Using tonal value and abstract forms, I tried to bring mystery to the viewers," said Rastogi.
CAPS traces its origins to around 1957, when it was set up as the College of Art Photo Society under the guidance of LM Sen.
After its activities paused in the mid-1970s, the society remained part of the institution's legacy. It was revived in 2020.
This year, along with photographs, the exhibition features a display of rare historic photography books, some over a century old, to create a dialogue between the past and present of the medium. One of these books dates back to 1898....
