14-year-old dies of suspected rabies
Rudrapur, June 13 -- A 14-year-old boy from Jumma village in Pithoragarh district's Dharchula block died after developing symptoms of rabies, marking the second such death reported from the village within the past 20 days, health officials said on Friday.
The deceased, identified as Yuvraj Singh, had reportedly been bitten by a dog in February along with several other villagers. After developing symptoms associated with rabies, he was admitted to the Community Health Centre in Dharchula and later referred to the District Hospital, Pithoragarh, on Wednesday due to his deteriorating condition.
"The boy had symptoms of rabies and had been referred from Dharchula to the district hospital on Wednesday. He died on Thursday evening," said Dr Ashu Awasthi, medical officer, District Hospital Pithoragarh.
The incident comes less than three weeks after the death of 13-year-old Mohit Dhami, also a resident of Jumma village, who had similarly developed rabies symptoms after a dog bite. He died on May 23 while being referred to a higher medical centre.
Chief medical officer, Pithoragarh, Dr SS Nabiyal said rabies is a viral disease transmitted through the bites of infected animals such as dogs, cats and monkeys. "Symptoms may appear after a delay, but timely medical treatment and vaccination can prevent the disease," he said....
