123rd accused in Summit Building call centre case arrested in Gujarat
LUCKNOW, Aug. 9 -- The investigation into the fake international call centre operated from Lucknow's Summit Building has widened further, with the Crime Branch arresting a 38-year-old man from Gujarat, bringing the total number of accused held in the case to 123, police said on Saturday.
"The latest accused, identified as Padmashali Niteshbhai, a resident of Khambhat in Anand district of Gujarat, was arrested in Ahmedabad based on technical and digital evidence gathered during the investigation," said Kiran Yadav, ADCP Crime. "Of the 123 arrests made so far, 119 were made from the Summit Building, three from Kolkata, and one from Gujarat," Yadav said.
According to a police statement, preliminary evidence indicated Niteshbhai's links with the operation of the fake international call centre and other members of its network. "He is being brought to Lucknow for detailed questioning, during which police will examine his specific role in the operation, his associates, and the financial and technical network connected with the centre," said the ADCP.
Electronic devices and other material evidence were recovered from him during the arrest, police said. These will be examined as part of the ongoing digital investigation. The latest arrest also brings Niteshbhai's previous record under scrutiny. Police said he had been chargesheeted in a case registered under the Information Technology Act at Kotwali Anand in Gujarat in 2019 and was currently out on bail in that case.
The Summit Building case was busted earlier on July 1 after police raided the premises and found an alleged network operating fake international call centres. Investigators have since expanded the probe beyond those arrested at the building, using digital and technical evidence to trace people allegedly connected with the operation.
Police said analysis of the digital evidence is continuing, and efforts are underway to identify and arrest other people allegedly involved in the network.
The latest development suggests that the investigation is now moving beyond the physical call-centre operation towards tracing its wider technical, financial and human network, officials said....
