12-yr-old killed after dumper hits and drags him 50 metres
LUCKNOW, June 3 -- A 12-year-old boy died after being run over and dragged nearly 50 metres by a dumper truck in Lucknow's Banthra area on Tuesday morning, police said. The driver allegedly failed to stop after the collision and instead accelerated, triggering panic among local residents who chased down the vehicle and caught the driver.
The accident took place around 7 am near Banthra Market on the Banthra-Ummed Khera Road.
According to police, the victim, identified as Manas, was crossing the road when the dumper struck him. Eyewitnesses said the child became trapped under the heavy vehicle and was dragged for a considerable distance as the driver continued moving. Locals who witnessed the incident chased the dumper, intercepted it and detained the driver before informing the police.
"A police team rushed to the spot and took the critically injured boy to the Sarojini Nagar Community Health Centre. He was referred to the Trauma Centre for advanced treatment but succumbed to his injuries on the way. Doctors declared him dead on arrival," said ACP Krishan Nagar Rajneesh Verma
"Police have seized the dumper and taken its driver, Mahendra Rawat, a resident of Miranpur Pinwat in the Sarojini Nagar area, into custody. He is being questioned and further legal action is underway," Police statement read.
"The victim's body has been sent for post-mortem examination, " the statement added.
Manas was the son of Mandous Tharu, a daily-wage porter working in Banthra Market. He is survived by his parents and three sisters. Family members and residents gathered at the scene after the accident, demanding strict action against the driver.
