LUCKNOW, Aug. 30 -- Two more patients tested positive for swine flu (H1N1) at Balrampur Hospital here on Friday, officials said on Saturday. The development comes after a 50-year-old woman died at the same hospital on Thursday. Currently, 11 H1N1 patients are under treatment at three government-run hospitals in Lucknow, according to details provided by officials The situation has prompted government hospitals to step up preparedness even as health officials maintained that the cases reported so far were sporadic and did not indicate an outbreak. In addition to the two patients at Balrampur Hospital, eight H1N1 patients are currently undergoing treatment at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS). One patient is admitted at Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (RMLIMS), said Dr NB Singh, chief medical officer in a press release shared with the media on Saturday. The state government has directed officials to intensify surveillance for influenza-like illness across all 75 districts. Dr BKS Chauhan, director of Balrampur Hospital, said both patients who tested positive on Friday had been confirmed through RT-PCR and were admitted to the hospital's isolation ward. "They are undergoing treatment under senior physician Dr Anand and their condition is stable," Chauhan said. The hospital has reserved an entire building as an isolation facility for swine flu patients. At SGPGI, officials said eight patients with H1N1 were currently admitted. Some patients who were admitted for other conditions. "Some patients presenting with influenza-like symptoms have tested positive for H1N1 or Covid-19. However, the cases remain sporadic and do not indicate an outbreak," an SGPGI official said, adding that most such patients had recovered with standard treatment. Yogesh Raghuwanshi, district health education and information officer, said RT-PCR testing was being done to confirm H1N1 infection in accordance with government guidelines. "Patients with influenza-like symptoms are being advised to undergo RT-PCR testing so that infections can be accurately identified and appropriate treatment and surveillance measures initiated," he said. Government hospitals in Lucknow have strengthened their arrangements. Dr GP Gupta, director of Civil Hospital, said a dedicated 12-bed ward had been reserved for swine flu patients and a fever desk established for screening and consultation. "A help desk has also been set up where patients can receive Tamiflu, wherever required. A nodal officer has been appointed to oversee swine flu preparedness and management," Gupta said. The hospital has also printed awareness pamphlets on preventive measures, which will be displayed at different locations to educate patients and attendants. Officials said other government hospitals had also reserved beds for swine flu patients and stocked essential medicines, testing kits and other supplies to ensure that suspected and confirmed cases could be tested, isolated and treated promptly. Amid the increase in cases, chief minister Yogi Adityanath has directed the Health Department and district magistrates to regularly review the situation and ensure adequate isolation facilities, medicines, testing kits and manpower. Deputy chief minister Brajesh Pathak said fever cases had increased in several parts of the state, particularly in districts bordering the Delhi-NCR region.
