KANPUR, May 14 -- Ten people were killed on Wednesday after a dust storm swept through Fatehpur, Unnao and Kanpur Dehat districts, bringing down walls, rooftops and trees within minutes. Unnao bore the brunt of the storm which lasted barely 20 minutes and left four people dead across the district. In Babakheda village, a eucalyptus tree fell on children playing nearby. Ansh, 9, died on the spot. Two men from adjoining villages, Rajepal, 42, of Barhakhurd and Amit, 30, of Makboolkheda, were trapped under the same tree and pulled out using a hydra crane before being rushed to Miyaganj CHC, the Unnao police said. In Singhupur village, Ram Aasre, 70, was working in his field when a mango tree collapsed on him. He was taken to the district hospital, where doctors declared him dead. In separate incidents, Siyaram of Pongha village and Vinod Kumar of Maita died when walls collapsed during the storm. Kanpur Dehat recorded three more deaths of a different nature. In Bhauthari, Ruchi, 19, had taken her goats under a neem tree when lightning struck, killing her. Ramchandra, 60, who was nearby, suffered minor burns and was hospitalised. The lightning also killed 33 goats belonging to three families. During a wedding ceremony in Kutra village, Saumya, 10, was standing near an unplastered mud wall when it collapsed during the storm, killing her instantly, the Kanpur Dehat police said. In Fatehpur, four more people died in separate incidents. Ritik Gautam, 15, was at his maternal grandparents' home in Qasimpur Katra when a brick wall collapsed on him. In Chalthara village, Umaira Begum, 65, fell from the third floor of her house during the storm and died from her injuries. In Basanta ka Purwa, Nanku, 18, died when a boundary parapet collapsed while he was on the roof. Siyakali, 55, of Bamharauli, later died during treatment after being injured in a wall and roof collapse. Officials said field reports have been sought from sub divisional magistrates in the affected districts and that compensation would be provided under applicable rules....
