PRAYAGRAJ, Aug. 12 -- As many as 1,863 transformers installed in the open or without adequate safety measures across Prayagraj division have been identified as potential accident hazards, particularly for children and livestock. Divisional commissioner Lokesh M has directed electricity department officials to fence and barricade all the identified transformers within three months and ensure safety arrangements conform to prescribed technical standards. The commissioner reviewed the status of open transformers at a meeting with chief engineers of distribution areas I and II on Tuesday. He said people continued to move around unfenced transformers, exposing them to the risk of electrocution. Children and animals were particularly vulnerable, he added. In Prayagraj alone, 500 transformers have been identified on priority. These include 200 under Urban Distribution Division-I and 300 under Urban Distribution Division-II. The commissioner directed officials to ensure that safety measures were not limited to token fencing around transformers but included proper barricading and other arrangements as per technical norms. Of the total 1,863 transformers identified, 347 are in Distribution Division-I, Trans-Yamuna, and 316 in Distribution Division-II, Trans-Ganga. Fatehpur has 320 such transformers, Pratapgarh 224 and Kaushambi 156.
