Haldwani, Sept. 7 -- A suspected waterborne illness that has been spreading in the Jeolikote area of Nainital district since July has claimed two lives after patients initially developed symptoms of diarrhoea and vomiting that later progressed to typhoid and jaundice, prompting the health department to issue an alert and intensify surveillance in the affected area, officials said. Ritesh Jeena, 16, a resident of Sariyatal, developed symptoms of typhoid, vomiting and diarrhoea on August 18. The family admitted him to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in Delhi, where he died late on Saturday. Neema Joshi, 26, a resident of Jeolikote, died while undergoing treatment at Ram Murti Hospital in Bareilly. She developed a liver infection and jaundice in early September. Bhimtal block pramukh Dr Harish Bisht said: "Contaminated drinking water was likely to be a major cause of the illness. The source of contamination needs to be identified and contained promptly, along with effective bleaching and chlorination of the water supply".
