Dehradun, June 29 -- Nagina MP Chandrashekhar Azad (from Uttar Pradesh) and Khanpur MLA Umesh Kumar (from Haridwar) said they, along with their supporters, were stopped by Haridwar police on Sunday at Tehri Garhwal from meeting the family of an 18-year-old Dalit youth who was allegedly beaten to death for being in a relationship with a 15-year-old girl from a different caste. The leaders were stopped at Shankaracharya Chowk, where police and paramilitary personnel prevented them from proceeding, they said. A brief scuffle broke out between security personnel and the supporters as they attempted to move ahead, following which Azad, Kumar and their supporters staged a sit-in at the spot. Addressing reporters, Azad alleged that police used force to stop them. "We were stopped with batons and my clothes were torn. Are we terrorists? I am an elected representative. In Uttarakhand, raising one's voice for justice has become a crime. In Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami's rule, my brother Ketan was brutally assaulted and treated like an animal. Is this constitutional governance? Is this not a part of India? Is this the Devbhoomi we talk about? We were only going to raise our voice for justice, but the police stopped us at the government's behest," he said. Haridwar SP (City) Abhay Pratap Singh did not respond to repeated calls seeking comment on the police action. Azad said he requested the authorities to allow only a small delegation to visit the victim's family, but the request was not accepted. Kumar alleged that the victim's family was under threat and demanded that the state government provide them adequate security. "Their lives could be in danger. The government should ensure their safety." According to police, on June 7, the girl allegedly had asked the victim to meet at Kholgarh village. When the victim, accompanied by his friend, went there, members of the girl's family allegedly assaulted both youths, leaving them critically injured.
