'Old rivalry led to firing at BJP youth wing leader; main accused arrested'
LUCKNOW, May 11 -- A long-standing rivalry between two families in Lucknow's Bazarkhala locality allegedly culminated in the shooting of 35-year-old Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) leader Chetan Tiwari as the main accused arrested in connection with Saturday night's incident confessed during interrogation that he attacked Tiwari over an old dispute, police said on Sunday.
Meanwhile, senior BJP leaders, including deputy chief minister Brajesh Pathak, party leader Neeraj Singh and party's district chief Anand Dwivedi visited the King George's Medical University (KGMU) on Sunday to inquire about Tiwari's condition.
"The main accused, Vaibhav Bajpai alias Kaustubh Bajpai, 25, was first detained Saturday night and then arrested within hours of the shooting after police scanned CCTV footage and questioned eyewitnesses," said DCP (West) Kamlesh Dixit.
According to police, Vaibhav told investigators that repeated disputes between his and Tiwari's family had been continuing for several years.
"The accused admitted that he fired at Chetan Tiwari due to an old rivalry and ongoing disputes between the families," a police press note read. The shooting took place around 10 pm outside Tiwari's house under the Market Bazarkhala police station limits when he was sitting along with his wife and newborn daughter. Police said the accused allegedly arrived with his associates, threatened Tiwari and then opened fire with the intent to kill. One bullet struck Tiwari near the waist and lodged in his spine.
Doctors said the spinal injury has left both his legs unresponsive. Police said the accused also fired at another person who attempted to save Tiwari during the attack, though no additional injuries were reported.
"Tiwari's wife Mansi alias Shweta, 30, alleged in her complaint that the accused and his associates also hurled casteist abuses and threatened the family before opening the fire," the press note read.
"Based on the complaint, police registered an FIR at Bazarkhala police station under charges including attempt to murder, criminal intimidation and provisions of the SC/ST Act," the DCP (West) said.
"Police recovered the firearm used in the attack after the accused's disclosure and raids were underway to trace other named suspects," Dixit said. Officials said Vaibhav has multiple criminal cases registered against him, including assault, intimidation and proceedings under the Uttar Pradesh Control of Goondas Act....
