'my return in the kerala story 2 would be too sad'
India, Feb. 27 -- Ever since The Kerala Story stormed theatres in 2023, actor Adah Sharma has remained closely identified with her character Shalini. So when its spiritual sequel, The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond, started making headlines, many assumed she would reprise her role. However, Adah says it would have been "too sad for the audience to handle".
In the first film, her character Shalini Unnikrishnan was a nursing student who is manipulated and converted to Islam. After conversion, she becomes Fatima Ba. Eventually Fatima joins the Islamic State (ISIS) and ends up in jail.
While The Kerala Story 2 also retains the core theme of forced religious conversions, Adah says poetic justice is to see her character behind the bars and not become part of the spiritual sequel. "I believe if you are a terrorist you should be in jail and that's why Shalini shouldn't be in it," she says.
"Shalini coming out just to be in the sequel wouldn't the right thing," she adds that her character might even invoke sympathy if it were to come out of jail. "Her story in jail, after losing her daughter and not being able to speak to her mother or family, would be too sad and would be difficult for the audience to handle."
Meanwhile, on Thursday, the Kerala High Court has stayed the release of the film, The Kerala Story 2. It was earlier scheduled for February 27th release....
