PATNA, Sept. 14 -- Leader of the Opposition (LoP) and RJD leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav on Sunday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of meting out stepmotherly treatment to Bihar amid severe floods that have affected more than 48 lakh people. Addressing a press conference, he alleged that the Centre swiftly announces relief packages and deploys forces for rain-related disasters in Gujarat but remains indifferent to Bihar's devastation. Yadav pointed to past instances where the Prime Minister held video conferences, spoke to Gujarat's chief minister and directed NDRF, SDRF and Indian Air Force assistance even for relatively limited rain damage. "Does the Prime Minister consider Bihar separate from the country? He comes during elections, seeks votes and eats litti-chokha, but ignores 45 lakh flood victims," he said. He contrasted this with the UPA era, recalling that then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi had visited Bihar during the 2008 Kosi floods and announced a substantial relief package. The RJD leader also took a sharp dig at Central ministers from Bihar-around seven-and the NDA's more than 30 MPs from the state, saying none had the courage or influence to demand a special relief package. "They have the government in Bihar and at the Centre, yet Bihar got a thumbs down," he remarked. Yadav further hit out at CM Samrat Choudhary, claiming the "double-engine" government has both engines "on fire". He alleged the state treasury is empty after the government withdrew about Rs.4,000 crore from contingency funds in June-just before the floods-to fund routine schemes and pensions, leaving little for disaster response. Letters written to the CM, deputy CM (on issues including erosion in Raghupur) and the Prime Minister on September 7 seeking national disaster status, a Rs.5,000 crore special package, and deployment of Air Force and Army helicopters for relief distribution had elicited no response, he said. "I do not know how often the CM talks to the PM or whether the PM talks to him at all," Yadav added, questioning Choudhary's ability to secure Central assistance. Floods, triggered by heavy rains and overflowing rivers originating from Nepal, continue to leave people stranded without electricity in several areas, with reports of poor-quality relief boats. Yadav warned that just as the Centre ignored Bihar in crisis, the people would ignore it in future.
