'Beti toh beti hai': CM Yogi condemns remarks against Akhilesh's daughter
VARANASI, June 14 -- Chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday condemned the alleged derogatory remarks made on social media against Samajwadi Party national president Akhilesh Yadav's daughter and said such comments against any daughter were unacceptable.
"Beti toh beti hoti hai. Recently, some people made inappropriate comments against the daughter of Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav. As soon as it came to my notice, I immediately ordered the police to register an FIR. Any derogatory comment against a daughter should not be acceptable. Beti toh beti hoti hai (A daughter is a daughter), and we have grown up in a culture that says that a daughter of the village is everyone's daughter, and a sister of the village is everyone's sister," he said.
The chief minister made the remarks in Azamgarh, a parliamentary constituency represented by Akhilesh Yadav and his father, the late Mulayam Singh Yadav, in the past. Adityanath inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for various development projects worth over Rs 955 crore on the occasion.
"We have not discriminated. But, Akhileshji, while you preach to others, you should also preach to your chelas (supporters), and tell them to exercise restraint in their language," Adityanath said.
"Before commenting on others, you should think about what kind of language your people use about daughters and sisters, the elderly and senior leaders. You should instill better values and sanskar in them. It would be best if you made them understand, if they do not understand, hand them over to us, and we will make them understand very well," Yogi said, apparently to the SP chief.
Attacking non-BJP governments, he said, "Remember Azamgarh before 2017, which was struggling for its identity. Back then, there was no university, no Purvanchal Expressway, no properly functioning airport, no music college in Hariharpur. Azamgarh's saris were not getting any platform, and Mubarakpur's black pottery also had no place. Today, a black pottery artisan met me and, very happily, he told me that since the double-engine government came to power in Uttar Pradesh, business has grown manifold."
He asked why a university was not set up in Azamgarh before 2017, why an expressway was not built before 2017, and why other developmental works were not done.
He said all this because those in power before 2017 lacked the will to ensure development.
He also asked why the name of Sanjarpur was dragged into every terror incident till more than a decade ago. Azamgarh has been a centre of penance by sages, and a centre of music, he said. "Then, I wonder why despite having such a glorious past, Azamgarh faced an identity crisis. I visit Azamgarh with this same question again and again," he said. Observing that Azamgarh has 10 assembly seats and two Lok Sabha seats, he said the BJP did not win a single one (in the 2022 assembly elections and the 2024 Lok Sabha elections respectively).
Despite this, our government has left no stone unturned for Azamgarh's development, he said and expressed hope that Bhojpuri star Dinesh Lal Yadav 'Nirahua' will definitely win the next election. 'Nirahua' won the Azamgarh Lok Sabha seat in the 2022 by-election, three years after he lost to Akhilesh Yadav in 2019. In 2024, Samajwadi Party's Dharmendra Yadav defeated him. "I suggest you shoot some of your films here as well. Give the youth of Azamgarh a chance to showcase their talent," the chief minister said.
Referring to the Ram temple in Ayodhya, he said he believed that had Maharaja Suheldev been there, it would not have been razed. "Maharaja Suheldev was not there, we were divided, the temple was broken.. We had to wait for 500 years, generations changed, but the temple could not be built."
When Yogi asked people of Azamgarh if they were happy with the construction of Ram Temple in Ayodhya, he received an affirmative response from the crowd. Yogi also announced a statue of Maharaj Suheldev would be installed in Azamgarh. Uttar Pradesh minister Anil Rajbhar raised the demand at the public meeting and his cabinet colleague Omprakash Rajbhar, the SBSP chief, reiterated the demand in the chief minister's presence.....
