JAMMU, Aug. 14 -- Nearly 35 years after a bomb blast rocked the Jammu railway station, killing three people and injuring 18, the Government Railway Police (GRP) on Thursday arrested an accused terrorist who had been absconding. The accused, Altaf Hussain Sheikh, son of Nazir Ahmed Sheikh of Bijbehara in Anantnag, was booked under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA). "The accused, who initially went underground and then lived with a concealed identity for several decades, has been arrested after a 35-year chase," said an official spokesperson. Officials said that the accused, along with other accomplices, was involved in an April 2, 1991, bomb blast which had occurred on platform number 1 at Jammu railway station. Officials said that the attack killed three persons, including two from paramilitary forces, and injured 18 civilians. An FIR number 07/1991 under Section 307, 302, 120(B) RPC, 3/4 TADA, 4/5 ESA was registered at Jammu GRP police station. During the investigation, an accused Aman Ullah Khan was arrested while three other accused had managed to escape and could not be arrested at that time. They were declared absconders by a court of law, officials said. "In the last two years, the Jammu GRP launched a manhunt and identified the accused Altaf Hussain Sheikh. They verified his identity by checking his residential details, discovering he lived under a fake identity as a successful businessman in Bijbehara," said the spokesperson.
