Jammu, June 14 -- In a significant crackdown against drug menace and illegal trafficking of pharmaceutical intoxicants, Doda police on Saturday unearthed an online drug supply network andseized a large consignment of pregabalin capsules, intended for illegal distribution in the district. On June 9, the District Special Branch (DSB), Doda, received credible information regarding the illegal procurement and distribution of Pregabalin-IP 300 mg capsules through online platforms and courier services, said a police officer. Pregabalin belongs to a class of medications known as anticonvulsants or gabapentinoids, which work by calming overactive nerves in the bodyrather than binding to opioid receptors. Acting upon the information, DSB Thathri launched discreet surveillance and intelligence-gathering operations to verify the inputs and identify the persons involved. Based on the intelligence developed, a joint team of DSB Thathri and Thathri police station apprehended one Sarmad Ali Khan, son of Ghulam Ali Khan of Khanpura Phagsoo, who was presently residing at Nai Basti Thathri on June 10 immediately after he collected a suspicious parcel from a courier centre. Upon examination, the parcel was found to be containing 2,000 Pregabalin-IP 300 mg capsules a prescription medicine often misused as an intoxicating substance. The consignment was seized on the spot and legal proceedings were initiated against the accused under the relevant provisions of law. The accused was produced before a first class executive magistrate Thathri, who remanded him to six days judicial custody. Further investigation is underway to identify the source of supply, financial transactions, and other persons involved in the network, said the officer.
