Mourners slapped with FIRs for expressing grief: Mehbooba
Srinagar, May 20 -- People's Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday alleged that mourners have been slapped with FIRs merely for expressing grief and emotions at the funeral of former Jamaat-e-Islami chief, Sheikh Ghulam Hassan in south Kashmir's Kulgam.
Mehbooba Mufti visited Tarigam, Kulgam to offer her condolences to the family of Sheikh Ghulam Hassan, former Amir e Jamaat, who passed away on Saturday after prolonged illness.
"Visited the family of late Sheikh Ghulam Hassan to offer condolences. A highly respected Islamic scholar and former Jamaat-e-Islami chief, thousands attended his funeral. It is unfortunate that mourners have been slapped with FIRs merely for expressing grief and emotions. Request Omar Abdullah and Manoj Sinha to stop this witch hunt," Mufti said on X.
The administration or J&K Police is yet to respond to the statement of the PDP chief.
The former chief minister told the media that some people gave speeches at the funeral which were emotional but were not against the country.
"Unfortunately people who were part of the funeral made some speeches which were emotional and perhaps were not as per our liking but there was nothing anti-national in the speeches or anything against the country. But we have now heard that FIRs have been registered. It is wrong," she said.
She cited the statement of senior Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) leader Dattatreya Hosabale advocating for dialogue with Pakistan as she stressed for stopping FIRs against our own people.
"On one hand Hosabale is saying that there should be dialogue with Pakistan and people to people exchange and on the other hand we have closed schools run by Jamaat e Islami - which has a particular ideology and we need not necessarily agree to that- which produced numerous doctors and engineers," she said.
"Thousands attended the funeral of Sheikh sb and among which a few, out of emotions, made some speeches which we don't like. But that does not mean the speeches were against the country. And then filing FIRs against them. Starting dialogue with Pakistan but here behaving in such a manner against our own people," she said.
Mufti urged the UT government and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to stop such actions.
" Such witch-hunts should be stopped and such behaviour against J&K people should be avoided including against Jamaat-e-Islami," she said.
In 2019, the central government imposed a ban on the Jamaat-e-Islami, Jammu and Kashmir, citing the outfit's alleged ties with militant groups.
Apni Party president Altaf Bukhari also termed lodging of FIR against people who spoke at the condolence gathering held for Sheikh Ghulam Hassan as "regrettable".
"If true, the lodging of an FIR against individuals who spoke at the condolence gathering held for noted Islamic scholar and former Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami, Sheikh Ghulam Hassan Sahib, is deeply regrettable. I strongly believe that these actions are unjustified, send a disturbing message, and dishearten the people," he said on X....
