Mirwaiz to centre: release Rashid on humanitarian grounds
Srinagar, April 17 -- Hurriyat chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Thursday urged the Centre to release Baramulla MP Er Rashid on humanitarian grounds so he can meet his ailing father.
Baramulla MP is currently lodged in Tihar jail in a Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) case on terror funding charges.
He was arrested in 2019 and successfully contested Lok Sabha elections while behind bars.
For the past three weeks, Rashid's father, Khazir Mohammad Sheikh, has been in serious condition and is undergoing treatment for various ailments. He was shifted from Chest Diseases Hospital to SMHS and has now been moved to the ICU after his condition deteriorated.
"Visited the critically ill father of incarcerated MP Engineer Rashid admitted at SMHS, yearning to see his son lodged in Tihar jail for a meeting which could be their last," Mirwaiz wrote on a post on X..
"I urge the Government of India to release Engineer Rashid to meet his ailing father, at least on humanitarian grounds."
