Jammu, Aug. 26 -- The Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) on Tuesday sealed 46 shops at the vegetable market in Indira Chowk for failing to pay rent for more than four years, officials said. A Jammu Municipal Corporation team swooped on the market early Tuesday morning along with a strong posse of police personnel and started sealing the shops. The sudden action took the shopkeepers by surprise, who admitted that they defaulted on rentals but assured to remit the same at the earliest. However, the JMC field staff proceeded with the legal action and sealed 46 shops. "The JMC served them repeated reminders and a final notice but the shopkeepers didn't remit the outstanding rentals prompting us to take legal action," said a senior JMC official. The shop owners subsequently visited deputy commissioner (North), JMC, Sanjay Badyal and assured the corporation that they would pay the rent regularly for the allotted shops, following which the shops were de-sealed. Due to non-payment of rent, sealing action was carried out on the directions of the municipal commissioner, said Badyal. Later, a delegation of affected shopowners submitted a written request offering to clear the rent dues and pay some amount in advance.
