J&K notifies policy to expand CNG, PNG in all 20 districts
Srinagar, Oct. 9 -- Chief minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday announced the notification of the Jammu and Kashmir City Gas Distribution (CGD) Policy, 2026, marking a push to expand clean energy access, lower fuel costs, and modernise energy infrastructure across the Union Territory.
Approved by the council of ministers, the policy establishes a time-bound framework to roll out piped natural gas (PNG) and compressed natural gas (CNG) for households, commercial units, industries and transport across all 20 districts.
To accelerate project execution, the policy introduces single-window clearances, streamlined rules for setting up CNG stations, and standardised right of way norms.
It also prioritises direct gas connectivity for key industrial estates, including Kathua, Samba, and Pulwama, to cut production costs and improve industrial efficiency.
Beyond environmental and cost benefits, officials expect the infrastructure expansion to attract clean-energy investments and boost local employment through new technical, operational, and maintenance jobs.
The chief minister commended food, civil supplies and consumer affairs minister Satish Sharma and the department for framing the policy.
"The policy will expand clean energy access while creating an enabling environment for industry and investment," Omar said. "It is an important step towards building a cleaner, more efficient, and sustainable energy future for J&K."...
