Doctor suspended over woman's death after childbirth
Shimla, July 1 -- The doctor who carried out the delivery of a woman who died after childbirth at a government hospital in Dhalpur was suspended on Tuesday, following two days of protest by the family and others against alleged negligence by hospital staff.
Health officials said a complaint regarding inappropriate behaviour and lack of professional conduct has been received and an inquiry has been marked under joint director, health department, to look into the complaint against a doctor and two nurses at Regional Hospital, Kullu.
The doctor has been suspended and action will be taken against the nurses as well, they said.
Tuesday marked the second day of hunger strike by the protestors, which includes family members of the deceased woman, Manju Sharma. They have been demanding that the doctor and two nurses at Regional Hospital, Kullu, be suspended, claiming that negligence led to the death of 23-year-old Manju Sharma.
Earlier in a letter to the director, health services, the medical superintendent of the hospital noted that a complaint has been received regarding Manju Sharma's death following childbirth at the hospital.
"According to the complaint, the allegations include: alleged inappropriate behaviour and lack of professional conduct; delay in providing medical attention to patients; unsatisfactory communication with patients and their attendants..." the letter read.
"...the matter has been noted for appropriate action," the medical superintendent said, noting that the protestors are demanding for suspension of Dr Anu Devi and staff nurses Reshma and Sonia.
Confirming, director health services, Gopal Beri, director health services, said, "We had received a complaint regarding inappropriate behaviour and lack of professional conduct. An inquiry has been marked under the joint director to look into the complaint against the doctor Anu Devi (gyne and Obs) and staff nurses Reshma and Sonia. The doctor has been suspended and action will be taken against the nurses as well."
On June 20, Sharma from Sunaru village near Bali Chowki in Mandi district was admitted for delivery. The attending doctor performed the delivery, but her condition deteriorated suddenly afterwards, according to relatives.
Her family members have alleged that the hospital staff were informed about her deteriorating health but a nurse dismissed it, claiming the woman was feigning distress.
Alleging negligence by doctors and other staff, hundreds of people held a protest at the hospital on Monday and blocked the Dhalpur Chowk for over two hours. They were pacified for some time after ADM Kullu Ashwani Kumar announced amagisterial inquiry into the incident....
