Direct-seeded rice tech cuts methane release
Dharamshala, Sept. 15 -- Direct-seeded rice technology can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve water productivity and enhance the potential for carbon credit generation, a study conducted by Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya (CSKHPKV), Palampur, has found.
The findings were presented during an interactive session organised by the university's Department of Soil Science, College of Agriculture, as part of a project on the popularisation of direct-seeded rice technology for climate change adaptation by reducing GHG emissions and acquiring carbon credits.
Dhanbir Singh, assistant soil chemist and principal investigator of the project, said the SAVA-134 FullPage(R) direct-seeded rice variety recorded the strongest overall performance among the direct-seeded treatments evaluated.
Supported by Savannah Seeds, the project was conducted in two major rice-growing regions of Himachal Pradesh to assess the potential of direct-seeded rice as a climate-smart and resource-efficient alternative to conventional transplanted rice.
According to the study, the technology reduced methane emissions by nearly 90% compared with conventional transplanted rice systems and recorded the highest water productivity.
