Congress holds 'Save Democracy Satyagraha'
Shimla, July 1 -- Congress party on Tuesday organised a "Save Democracy Satyagraha" at the Ridge in Shimla, alleging democratic institutions in the country are under threat.
The protest was led by Sunil Panwar, National President of the All India Rajiv Gandhi Panchayati Raj Organisation, and was attended by Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) office-bearers, leaders of the party's frontal organisations, district functionaries and party workers.
Talking to the media in Shimla, Panwar said "The democratic institutions in the country are being weakened under the BJP-led Central government. We have gathered at Mahatma Gandhi's statue in Shimla to hold a Satyagraha to protect democratic institutions, democratic freedoms and the Constitution drafted by Baba saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar."
Talking about the purpose of the nationwide campaign, Panwar "After our protest at Jantar Mantar and our march towards the Election Commission of India, many of our workers were detained by police. We then resolved to organise Satyagrahas across the country," he said.
BJP Rajya Sabha MP Harsh Mahajan lashed out at Congress government in Himachal Pradesh for what he termed "weakening democratic institutions and disrespecting the people's mandate".
Mahajan's statement comes a day after the elections of mayor and deputy mayor for municipal corporations Solan and Dharmashala were deferred for want of sufficient quorum.
He said that for the first time in the state's history, the elections for chairpersons and vice-chairpersons of Zila Parishads, municipal councils, nagar panchayats, Block Samitis, and mayor and deputy mayor of municipal corporations have been kept pending for such a long period....
