Amarnath Yatra suspended from Baltal route due to bad weather
Jammu, Aug. 1 -- The annual Amarnath yatra was suspended from the Baltal route on Friday due to inclement weather and to facilitate repair work on the track, officials said.
The yatra has already been suspended from the Pahalgam route to carry out necessary repairs.Heavy rains lashed the Baltal area on Thursday night, triggering a minor flashflood at one location.
However, no loss of life or damage to property was reported, officials said. Owing to the adverse weather and ongoing repair work, no pilgrim was allowed to proceed towards the holy cave shrine from the Baltal route, they said.
Repair work on the track is currently underway, officials added.
The 250-km long Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH 44), the only all weather surface link that connects Kashmir with rest of India, remained shut on Friday, said officials.
The step was taken to repair and restore the affected stretches in Udhampur and Ramban districts following the passage of 1,605 Amarnath pilgrims left the Yatri Niwas base camp in Bhagwati Nagar early Friday for the Baltal base camp, said officials.
The announcement regarding no moment on the NH was made by Jammu and Kashmir traffic police on Thursday.
"Traffic movement was closed on the highway because the NHAI had to do widening of hill-side carriageway at Ladha, Samroli and the removal of loose overhanging debris near Gangroo and Kishtwari Pather between Udhampur and Banihal stretch of NH-44," said a senior traffic police officer.
The officer informed that no vehicle was allowed to proceed beyond Nagrota in Jammu district and towards Srinagar, Doda, Kishtwar, Ramban,Patnitop, etc and vice versaand beyond Qazigund towards Ramban, Udhampur and Jammu.
Authorities have advised commuters to follow official traffic advisories before planning their journeys. In view of MeT forecast, schools also remained shut in Poonch and Rajouri district on Friday.
However, those within municipal limits functioned. The Met department has forecast one to two spells of light, moderate rains with thunder at many places and with possibility of brief intense heavy showers at few places across Jammu region till August 4....
