200 given anti-rabies shots in Kashmir village, one arrested
Srinagar, May 16 -- At-least 200 villagers have been given anti-rabies vaccine as a precautionary measure in southern district of Pulwama in Kashmir after consuming meat of an allegedly ill bovine animal, officials said.
The butcher has been arrested and a case has been registered. "We have filed an FIR and arrested the butcher for selling the infected meat," said Abdul Razzaq, station house officer of Neva police station.
He said that they are also investigating which animal was sold. "There have been rumours of the animal being bitten by a dog which are not true. The animal was normally ill," he said.
Panic gripped Parigam village after rumours spread that a butcher sold the meat of a dog-bitten animal.
The villagers, who consumed the meat, rushed to the nearest public health centre.
Pulwama chief medical officer said they have given anti-rabies vaccines as a precautionary measure. "Some 200-250 villagers were given the vaccine prophylactically. As such there was no need," she said. "Since people were scared, the action was taken. Otherwise cooking finishes all the infection. Besides the dog biting the animal was just a rumour," she said....
