Villagers call for boycott of panchayat polls in Bharatpur
Bharatpur, Oct. 8 -- Villagers in Ghasola on Wednesday held a meeting and announced a complete boycott of the upcoming panchayat elections, protesting the recent delimitation of gram panchayats in Bharatpur district.
Ghasola village, which falls under Panchayat Samiti Sewar, has been included in the newly formed Nagla Bartai gram panchayat. The villagers are demanding that Ghasola be made the panchayat headquarters instead of Nagla Bartai.
Villagers said Ghasola was earlier part of Behnera gram panchayat.
According to the villagers, Ghasola has around 2,500 voters, compared with 1,494 in Nagla Bartai. They argued that Ghasola should have been made the panchayat headquarters given its larger population.
They also said the new panchayat headquarters is around 7 km from Ghasola and that the gram panchayat has been divided between two police station jurisdictions.
The villagers said they had decided to boycott not only the upcoming panchayat elections but also future assembly and Lok Sabha elections if their demand was not addressed.
Bharatpur sub-divisional officer Bharti Gupta said she was not aware of the villagers' decision to boycott the panchayat elections. "We will seek information and inputs regarding the villagers' decision to boycott the elections," she said....
