Villagers attack police team during raid in Deeg, 5 officers injured
Bharatpur/Deeg, June 17 -- Five police officers were injured and referred to Bharatpur District Hospital after they were allegedly attacked by villagers while attempting to arrest a suspected illegal arms smuggler in Rajasthan's Deeg district, police said on Tuesday.
The incident took place on Monday in Budli village under the Sikri police station area when a police team conducted a raid to apprehend Bhuttu Khan, who is accused of involvement in illegal arms smuggling.
According to police, the team detained Khan and recovered an illegal firearm from his possession. However, as officers were taking him to the police station, a group of villagers gathered at the spot and allegedly attacked the police team, enabling the accused to escape.
Five police personnel sustained injuries in the assault and were later referred to Bharatpur District Hospital for treatment.
Deeg Superintendent of Police Sharan Gopinath Kamble said police teams have been formed to trace and arrest the absconding accused. He added that Khan was allegedly involved in illegal arms smuggling activities.
Meanwhile, former Nagar MLA Wajib Ali defended Khan, claiming that he is a farmer owning around 16 hectares of agricultural land in the village.
Ali alleged that police were pressuring Khan to pay a bribe and that the accusations of illegal arms smuggling were false. He said Khan runs a seeds and fertiliser shop and has no connection with arms smuggling.
Police have not commented on the bribery allegation....
