Two dead while cleaning sewer tank in Jaipur
Jaipur, April 19 -- Two contract labourers have died after inhaling toxic gas while cleaning a sewer tank in Jaipur's Jhotwara zone, police said on Saturday, with a worker's association alleging that the two were not provided adequate protective equipment and standard procedures were not followed by their contractor.
Kardhani police station house officer, Sawai Singh, said, "The incident took place on Friday evening in the 200-Feet Road locality under the Jhotwara zone. Both deceased were contract labourers tasked with cleaning the sewage tank."
Officers said the workers screamed for two to three minutes after entering the tank before losing consciousness, apparently due to toxic gases.
"The locals informed the police, who immediately reached the spot, pulled them out and took them to Kanwatia Hospital, where doctors declared them dead," Singh said.
The deceased were identified as Rambabu and Ajay, both Jaipur natives. The deceased's families and members of Valmiki Safai Karamchari Sangathan refused to release the bodies for autopsy.
Association president Nandlal Dandoria said, "The two labourers were not provided any safety measures during the work that led to the mishap. We want the government to take immediate action against the contractor and provide suitable compensation to the family members."
Jaipur Nagar Nigam commissioner Om Kasera said, "It's a sheer violation of guidelines. The responsibility will be ascertained after the investigation, and appropriate action will be taken against those found guilty. If any municipality staff is also involved, we will not spare them."
Congress leaders Tikaram Jully and Pratap Singh Khachariyawas visited the site and met the families.
Former chief minister Ashok Gehlot accused the BJP government of failing to end manual scavenging. "At least 10 people died due to manual scavenging in the last year in Rajasthan. Will the government always determine the price of the labourers' lives by their caste and economic status? When will they get justice? Such incidents, despite the directions from the Supreme Court, are a failure of the government. It is shameful that people are still involved in manual scavenging in the 21st century. CM Bhajan Lal Sharma must take action in this case."
BJP spokesperson Ramlal Sharma said, "The administration has launched a probe into the matter. Necessary action will be taken against the culprits."...
