Thousands of Fish Die in Ana Sagar Lake, cong stages protest
Ajmer, July 17 -- The death of thousands of fish in Ajmer's historic Ana Sagar Lake has continued for the past fortnight with municipal corporation workers removing truckloads of dead fish daily and disposing them at the trenching ground.
Dr. Subrato Dutta, head of the department of environmental science at Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati University, said the increasing inflow of contaminated water has significantly reduced oxygen levels in the lake. Rising temperatures have further decreased the amount of dissolved oxygen available to aquatic life, leading to the large-scale fish deaths. He suggested that aeration of the lake is the most effective immediate solution to increase oxygen levels and prevent further losses.
The Ajmer City District Congress Committee staged a protest at Ana Sagar Chowpatty on Thursday under the leadership of President Dr. Rajkumar Jaipal. Protesters accused the district administration of negligence and warned if the condition of the lake does not improve within seven days, the Congress will call for a citywide shutdown.
District collector Lok Bandhu said the Municipal Corporation is taking all necessary measures to address the situation. He said the proposal to restart lake aeration to improve oxygen levels is under consideration....
