Jaipur, Oct. 8 -- For the first time, Rajasthan Police will deploy its special Kalika Patrolling Unit to ensure the safety of women and girls during Navratri and Garba celebrations. According to officials, feedback from Garba organisers, police and participants in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra has prompted plans to deploy women personnel from the unit inside Garba pandals this year. The units will conduct plainclothes surveillance, identify poorly lit areas, coordinate lighting and CCTV arrangements, monitor parking areas and help women return home safely after the events. Deputy inspector general of police and nodal officer for community policing Pankaj Chaudhary has directed superintendents of police in all districts to deploy the Kalika Unit and involve community policing networks during Garba and Navratri celebrations. "Feedback from organisers of the annual Garba festival identified late-night travel home, pushing and shoving in crowds, unauthorised photography and video recording, emergency assistance and the safety of minor participants as major concerns. This time, we are preparing to address all these issues," he told HT. Chaudhary said such complaints were more common in major cities, including Jaipur. Women police personnel will be deployed in Garba attire and plain clothes among participants to keep a close watch on anyone harassing or misbehaving with women, he added. According to Chaudhary, returning home is a major concern for women participants. Traffic often delays their pick-up, or they are unable to find a cab. In such cases, the Kalika Unit will help arrange their safe return home. "Anyone caught will face action under Section 151. If somone has acted inadvertently, we will issue a warning and take preventive measures," DIG Chaudhary said. "Habitual offenders and those involved in serious offences will face legal action," he added....
