JAIPUR, Sept. 16 -- The Clinical Haematology Department at Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital has successfully performed Rajasthan's first HLA-mismatched bone marrow transplant involving a major ABO blood-group mismatch, marking a significant advance in the state's treatment of complex blood cancers. The highly complex transplant was performed on a 49-year-old man suffering from chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML), who had progressed to the lymphoid blast phase, a rare and high-risk stage of the disease requiring intensive treatment. The patient recovered satisfactorily following the transplant and was discharged from the hospital on Monday. An official release states that before the transplant, the patient underwent intensive chemotherapy and targeted therapy to control the leukaemia and achieve the deepest possible remission. Following treatment, he achieved measurable residual disease (MRD)-negative status, after which the medical team proceeded with the transplant. The patient underwent an allogeneic bone marrow transplant using an HLA-mismatched family donor. The procedure was further complicated by a major ABO blood-group mismatch between the patient and donor. Such transplants require specialised preparation and close monitoring because of the additional complications associated with both HLA and blood-group incompatibility. The entire transplant and associated treatment were provided free of cost under the state government's MAA scheme.
