Bhilwara, July 26 -- The roof of the principal's room at a government school in Rajasthan's Bhilwara district collapsed late on Friday night, nearly a year after the deaths of seven children in a school building collapse in Jhalawar raised concerns over the safety of dilapidated school infrastructure. No one was present in the school when the roof caved in, averting a major tragedy. The incident occurred at Mahatma Gandhi Government School near Hurda Bus Stand in the Gulabpura area. After being alerted, officials of the education department, along with the school administration and staff, reached the spot and assessed the damage. The debris is being cleared and a safety inspection of the building has been initiated. Authorities said the cause of the collapse is being investigated and technical inspections of other classrooms will also be carried out to prevent similar incidents. School principal Reema Meena said school records, electronic equipment and furniture kept in the room were damaged in the collapse. She said she had been on leave for the past five days due to a medical emergency in her family. When school staff arrived on Saturday morning, they found the roof slabs of the principal's room lying on the floor. Officials suspect the roof slabs were old and structurally weak. During earlier renovation work, a false ceiling had been installed beneath the roof, which may have concealed signs of deterioration.
