Jaipur, Sept. 9 -- A 42-year-old tourist guide at the Amer Fort who was stabbed multiple times by a jeep driver and his associate on Monday after an altercation near the fort died in hospital on Tuesday. The deceased was identified as Manish Soni. Police said news of his death triggered a shutdown staged by local guides and traders at the Amer Market, spurring heavy deployment of forces to keep law and order. Amer station house officer Rajendra Godara said the incident took place near Maotha Lake. The accused, identified as jeep driver Azam and his associate Nazish, were stationed near the area when a group of tourists arrived in a private vehicle, asking for directions to the fort. Azam allegedly claimed that private vehicles were barred from going towards the fort and suggested that the group hire a jeep instead. Manish, who was also nearby, reportedly intervened and offered directions to the tourists, who subsequently left. Police said this spurred the dispute, which escalated after Azam and Nazish allegedly stabbed Soni in the abdomen. He was rushed to SMS Hospital in critical condition and admitted to the intensive care unit. Police arrived at the scene soon after the stabbing and detained Azam and Nazish. Both are currently being questioned. Tensions briefly flared after locals staged a sit-in at the road towards the fort on Monday. They demanded compensation worth Rs.1 crore for Soni's family. Police said they intervened to prevent a communal escalation ahead of urban body elections. HT was unable to verify reports that Soni purportedly approached the police earlier alleging threats from the accused and they allegedly failed to take action. Senior police officers refused to comment on the allegations. Deputy SP Sangram Singh of the Tourist Assistance Force described the killing as a "very serious incident" and said, "I assure you that we will increase our manpower and take stricter action against unauthorised guides and others operating in the area. " An agreement was reportedly reached between Soni's family and the administration on Tuesday after hours of talks. Officials did not disclose the terms, citing the Model Code of Conduct in force for the civic elections. However, an officer involved said the administration had agreed to demands including compensation of Rs.25 lakh, the allotment of a dairy booth and a contractual job for one of Soni's dependants....
