Jaipur, Sept. 16 -- The results of Rajasthan's urban local body elections have opened up the possibility of a political space beyond the BJP-Congress contest, with the Rashtriya Loktantrik Party (RLP), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and CPI(M) making their presence felt in pockets of the state. Hanuman Beniwal's RLP won 63 wards across 14 districts, retaining its regional foothold. Its strongest performance came in Nagaur, where it won 28 seats, followed by Beawar with eight. For AAP, the biggest breakthrough came in Baran Municipal Council, where it won 31 of 60 wards to secure a clear majority. Congress won 18 seats and BJP nine. CPI(M) also registered a strong localised performance in Nokha in Bikaner district, winning 29 of 45 wards. BJP won 13 and Independents three. However, calling the three parties a consolidated "third front" at this stage would be premature. Congress senior leader Swarnim Chaturvedi, however, dismissed the possibility of significant space for a third front. He said Congress had strategically not fielded candidates on party symbols in several areas where it has a strong base. The victories of smaller parties, he said, should not be interpreted as a major shift in the state's political landscape. BJP state secretary Ekta Agrawal also rejected the third-front interpretation, saying the smaller parties' victories were largely the result of local equations.
