Rally to protect Oran land halted by police
Jaipur, April 17 -- Hundreds of protesters from across Rajasthan marched in the "Oran Bachao" foot rally on Thursday to demand protection of grazing and forest lands, but were stopped by police near Jaipur's Bhawani Niketan, triggering brief scuffles.
The march began from Bhawani Niketan on Sikar Road and was headed towards the Chief Minister's residence to draw the government's attention to environmental protection and safeguarding of Oran land (traditional sacred groves), but was stopped by police near the starting point. A brief scuffle broke out between protesters and police at Bhawani Niketan. Independent MLA from Shiv in Barmer, Ravindra Singh Bhati, who joined the protest, criticised the government, saying a large number of elderly people from the international border areas of Jaisalmer, many of whom contributed during the 1965 and 1971 wars, had travelled to Jaipur but were forced to take to the streets for their legitimate demands.
Bhati said the issue requires serious attention and called for Oran land to be officially recorded in revenue records. He alleged that a significant portion of such land remains undocumented. Protestors said the march began on January 21 from Jaisalmer....
