Ajmer, July 22 -- Under the Centre's National Action Plan for Prevention and Control of Snakebite Envenoming, the state's first Poison Information Centres to aid victims of snakebites is set to come up at Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital in Ajmer, officials said. The centre is expected to become operational within the next two months. They added that the centre will serve as a state-level research and training hub. In the event of a serious snakebite anywhere in Rajasthan, doctors will be able to contact the centre for expert guidance on treatment, including the appropriate use of anti-snake venom. . Dr Munesh Meena of the hospital's Department of Medicine has been appointed as the nodal officer for the project, said officials. Under the project, the Medical and Health Department, Chief Medical and Health Officers and the Forest Department are collecting data on snakebite cases reported across the state over the past five years. The district-wise data will be analysed to determine the number of cases, symptoms and the snake species responsible for bites in different parts of the state. Based on the findings, Rajasthan's first State Snakebite Action Plan will be prepared. According to data available with the Medical and Health Department, Rajasthan reported 7,114 snakebite cases in 2022, of which 53 people died. In 2023, 5,799 cases and 29 deaths were reported, while in 2024, the number of reported cases rose sharply to 40,101, with 56 deaths....
